These arched windows are one of the distinctive features of this house. Spanish features include stucco over the hollow clay tiles, heavy beams and exposed roof beams with braces and brackets, tiled roofs, the arcade of arches and columns behind the house, and the bell tower with wing wall on the detached hollow clay carriage house. This is one of the first houses built in La Playa, a San Diego subdivision that pre dates Horton's Addition by 11 years. The map of La Playa was recorded in 1856. The house was not designed by a master architect and yet embodies some of the unique characteristics for which some contemporary architects as William Hebbard and Irving Gill were known.
